Q: How can I participate in the competition?

To enter the competition, a company must fill out and submit the online application form available here before the application deadline of 20 August 2018.

Q: Who can apply?

  • This initiative is aimed at entrepreneurs from a Black heritage background.
  • Entrepreneurs particularly from this background who own a start-up company that is registered and based in the UK.
  • At a minimum the company must have a viable product/service. 
  • All entrants entering the competition on behalf of the start-up must be residents in the UK aged 18 years or over.
  • The competition is not open to any business which is a KPMG audit client.

Q: What constitutes Black heritage?

For the purposes of this initiative, Black Heritage focuses on those who self-identify as coming from an ethnic background which is partially or wholly defined as Black. Leveraging the most recent Census classifications, this would encompass individuals who self-identify as the following:

Mixed/Multiple Ethnic Groups:

  • White and Black African
  • White and Black Caribbean

Black / African / Caribbean / Black British:

  • African
  • Caribbean
  • Any other Black

Q: Is there a limit to the number of entries?

There is no limit to the number of different applications, although we kindly request you to submit a single entry per company.

Q: How do I know if my company qualifies as a 'start-up' for the purpose of this competition?

We aim to be as inclusive as possible; if your company is registered and based in the UK, we encourage you to apply.

Q: What stage should my company be at to be considered?

At the minimum your company must have a viable product/service.

Q: What is the Judging Day?

All finalists will be invited to pitch their businesses to a panel of industry experts. Each company will be given a total of eight (8) minutes on stage, four (4) minutes to pitch followed by four (4) minutes for Question and Answer with the judging panel.

Q: What is the criteria for Judging Day?

All applications will be scored under four categories with equal weighting to each. The categories are Pitch Quality, Market Potential, Traction and Disruption and Innovation. The decision of the expert industry panel will be final.

Q: What are the costs involved in participation?

There is no charge for entering into the competition.

Q: What are the competition prizes?

The three winners will be enrolled onto a 12 month programme receiving:

  • A dedicated senior KPMG professional to provide mentorship and coaching
  • Expert-led skills workshops covering: leadership, strategic growth, negotiation and fundraising
  • Publicity through our PR channels
  • £5,000 to invest in their business or as a donation to the charity or community project of their choice

None of the prizes can be substituted by an alternative.

Q: How and when will the winners be notified?

The winners will be notified on Judging day as part of a short award ceremony.
