Terms and Conditions - KPMG's Best British Tech Pioneer 2020

This competition is being run by KPMG LLP, with registered number is OC301540 and registered office located at 15 Canada Square, London E14 5GL. All references to ‘KPMG’, ‘we’ and ‘our’ within these Terms and Conditions shall mean KPMG LLP.

The competition will open on 21 October 2019. In order to enter the competition you must complete and submit the application form available at: https://kpmgenterprise.co.uk/BBTP before 23:59 on 1 December 2019 and be available to attend one of the UK regional heats in January 2020, the Semi-Final in London in February 2020 and Mobile World Congress (MWC) from 24-27 February 2020 in Barcelona (as explained below) if your entry progresses to that stage.

This competition is aimed at businesses typically in the startup and scale up phase and which have innovative, proven technologies, robust business models, the ability to demonstrate traction in their activities and the potential of global scale.

For the purposes of competition, applicants:

  • A registered UK company
  • Have been operating for 5 years or less (in current form)
  • Revenue generating between £1-10m; or have raised at least £500k in equity
  • Either a pure technology or a tech-enabled business
  • Not majority owned by a large corporate
  • Available to pitch at a UK regional event in January 2020
  • Available to pitch at a Semi-Final event in London in February 2020 (if selected)
  • Available to pitch at Mobile World Congress from 23-27 February 2020 in Barcelona (if selected)

All entrants entering the competition on behalf of a company, must be residents in the UK and aged 18 or over. KPMG employees and contractors are prohibited from entering the competition. The competition is not open to any company which is a KPMG audit client or an affiliate or a connected party to the audit client.

Entrants may apply more than once, but there should not be more than one entry per company.

All valid applications will be assessed once the application stage closes. Applications will be collated and reviewed under three categories with equal weighting to each. The categories are; innovation and disruption, market potential, and traction and momentum.

Applicants who are successful after this initial round and subject to KPMG screening checks will be invited to pitch at one of our regional heats in January 2020 where they will be judged by a panel of industry experts. Applicants are requested to state their preferred, 1 to 3, pitching locations. We will try to accommodate your preferences but where we are not able to do this you will be invited to pitch at an alternative location. 

All applications will be scored under five categories with equal weighting to each. The categories are; innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, company growth potential, customer focussed, risk awareness. At least one winner from each regional heat will progress to a Semi-Final event in London in February 2020. The decisions of the industry expert panels will be final. 

Winners of the regional heats and Semi-Final will be notified on the day of the competition as part of a short award ceremony. The final winner will be announced on stage at MWC 2020.

No written feedback will be provided to the applicants in relation to their scores, the comments of the judges or their deliberations. The judges may want to provide a short summary of the quality of the competition as part of the announcement of the winner, however this is envisaged to be general in nature and not be related to any one pitch or company.

There are no charges for entering the competition, although the cost of submitting an entry and attending the judging day will be met by applicants.

Six finalists will be selected from the Semi-Final event to go to MWC 2020 in Barcelona where they will pitch to industry experts on stage at 4YFN, where one overall winner will be selected as KPMG’s Best British Tech Pioneer 2020.

Finalists will receive

  • Pitch on one of the main stages at the 2020 Four Years From Now (4YFN) at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
  • Exhibit at 4YFN at a dedicated, prominent booth. The conference is attended by 20,000+ founders, investors and corporate decision makers from around the world. Flight, accommodation, exhibiting platform and conference pass are included.
  • Profile your business with the media before, during and after MWC, leveraging KPMG channels.
  • Attend KPMG events with business luminaires and CEOs from leading fast growth private UK business

Winners of the competition agree that KPMG may use their name and image, and the name and branding of the company that they are entering, to announce the winner of the competition and for any other reasonable and related promotional and marketing purposes. The collection and use by KPMG of any of this information constituting ‘personal data’ for the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (‘GDPR’) shall be in accordance with KPMG’s Privacy Policy available at https://home.kpmg.com/uk/en/home/misc/privacy.html.

If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, KPMG may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you and/or your company from participating in the competition. By entering the competition you are agreeing on your own behalf and all directors, and on behalf of the company which you are entering, to be bound by these terms and conditions.

KPMG reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the competition and/or the prize where it becomes necessary to do so.

Insofar as is permitted by law, we will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate a winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize, except where it is caused by our negligence or that of our employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.

These terms and conditions shall be governed by English law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
